Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, Joni was the first female member of the Board of Directors at Fifth Third Bank, and was truly committed to her community. Glorifying the Lions Awards 2008Donna Jones Baker, President & CEO of the Urban League of Greater Cincinnati, recognizes five outstanding Greater Cincinnatians and three local companies for their leadership and community spirit. The 2008 Glorifying the Lions Award recipients were retired jurist, the Honorable Jack Sherman, Jr.; renowned photographer C. Smith; prsident of Every Child Succeeds, Dr. Judith Van Ginkel; UC professor, Dr. Jeanette Taylor; and former Enquirer Woman of the Year, Clarice White. Also, three area corporations were honored for their dedication to the League and its programs. The Corporate Medallion Award was presented to Darden Restaurants, PNC Bank and the United Way of Cincinnati. Profiles in Courage - Marian SpencerMarian Spencer, the first female president of the local chapter of the NAACP in 1981 and elected to the Cincinnati City Council in 1983, is one of five honorees receiving the Fifth Third Bank Profiles in Courage award. This award recognizes the resilience and courage of local African Americans who have met life's challenges head on - and won. Profiles in Courage - Betty SouthallBetty Southall is one of five honorees receiving the Fifth Third Bank Profiles in Courage award. Profiles in Courage recognizes the resilience and courage of local African Americans who have met life's challenges head on - and won. She has been employed at Nu Blend Paint since 2002 and has worked many years at fast-food restaurants while supporting a family of eight children. Profiles in Courage - Edwin RigaudEdwin Rigaud, founding president and CEO for the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, is one of five honorees receiving the Fifth Third Bank Profiles in Courage award. This award recognizes the resilience and courage of local African Americans who have met life's challenges head on - and won. Mr. Rigaud took on the leadership of the Freedom Center as an executive on loan from Procter & Gamble. He assembled a team that built the museum. Profiles in Courage - John H. LeahrJohn H. Leahr, a Tuskegee Airman who flew 123 missions, is one of five honoreees receiving the Fifth Third Bank Profiles in Courage award. The award recognizes the resilience and courage of local African Americans who have met life's challenges head on - and won. Mr. Leahr has been decorated with the Air Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, plus area and theater ribbons. CET interviewed Mr. Leahr as part of our series THE WAR.
