FOCUS - The Cincinnati Observatory Celebrates 400 Years of Astronomy

On this episode of Focus, Craig Niemi and Dean Regas talk about how the Cincinnati Observatory Center will celebrate the International Year of Astronomy (IYA), which marks the 400th anniversary of Galileo's scientific use of the telescope.

International Year of Astronomy

Dean Regas, Outreach Astronomer at the Cincinnati Observatory, talks with 91.7WVXU's Ann Thompson about the International Year of Astronomy. Celebrating the 400 years since Galileo first looked through a telescope, 135 countries will be promoting astronomy in 2009 with thousands of events. Cincinnati Observatory Center will be participating in an international webcast, holding classes on how to use a telescope, and hosting some sidewalk astronomy experiences as well as making free telescopes available for schools. Cincinnati Observatory Center's Rick Hunter on the Phoenix Lander

The Phoenix Lander is answering questions about Mars and providing data that will be useful for guiding new lines of inquiry for scientists for years to come. Scientists at NASA have partnered with other organizations including L3 Communications, Cincinnati Electronics to accomplish this work.
