 eTech Ohio Student Video Contest 2009
Do you have a compelling story to tell? Are you an expert? Can you teach others? Can you show your connections to the larger international community? If so, create an entry for the 2009 Student Video Contest.
OVERVIEW
eTech Ohio, the Ohio Public Television Stations, and The Ohio Department of Education present the Sixth annual Student Video Contest (SVC). The purpose of SVC 2009 is to recognize outstanding Ohio student achievement in the use of video production technologies while meeting Ohio academic content standards and other instructional objectives. Students in grades 6-8 or 9-12 are invited to submit their video productions in the categories of Teaching and Learning Through Storytelling, Sharing Expertise by Demonstrating a Concept or Connections to the World. Videos are submitted to a student's or student group's local public television station by Wednesday, November 12, 2008, where they will compete against other submissions from their area. The top 2 videos in each category and grade level will advance as Regional finalists to compete in a statewide competition in December, 2008. State finalists and the sponsoring teacher will be invited to participate in the 2009 eTech Ohio Educational Technology Conference. State finalists and the Videos of the Year will be honored during an awards ceremony on Wednesday, February 4, 2009.
Who May Apply? The contest is open to ALL current Ohio 6-12 grade public or private school students or groups of students. Students in all subject areas are encouraged to submit their video productions.
How Does the Contest Work? SVC 2009 consists of both a regional and state level competition. Applicants submit their entries to their local public television station by Wednesday, November 12, 2008. Regional winners go on to compete at the state level in December 2008. State finalist teams will be honored at the 2009 eTech Ohio Educational Technology Conference on Wednesday, February 4, 2009.
How Do I Apply?
What are the Contest Rules?
- Participation is limited to students in grades 6-8 or 9-12
- Submissions must be from current (as of Friday, August 29, 2008) public or private school individual students or student teams
- Videos must have been created between March 1, 2008 and November 12, 2008.
- Videos will be accepted in one of three categories - Teaching and Learning Through Storytelling, Sharing Expertise by Demonstrating a Concept or Connections to the World
- Submissions are limited to a maximum length of 4:00 minutes, with a student introduction of 30 seconds or less. Total video project length shall not exceed 00:04:30.
- The video must address one or more Ohio academic content standards. Information about Ohio academic content standards can be found at http://www.ode.state.oh.us
- Applicants must include two (2) copies of the video on Mini DV, DVD-R or VHS format
- A signed release form must be included for each person appearing (including image, voice or any other likeness or description) in video and a signed release form granting publishing clearance from each creator of the submission
- Video must be appropriate for all audiences
- Citations must be provided for all copyrighted materials used in the video
- Permission to use copyrighted materials MUST be obtained for all copyrighted materials used in the video
- Submit your video entry by Wednesday, November 12, 2008, to your local PBS television station.

TEACHING AND LEARNING THROUGH STORYTELLING CATEGORY
Submissions in this category may present fictional or non-fictional narratives using classic storytelling conventions (setup, plot and/or character development, dialogue, denouement, resolution, etc.) or be a news style story following the six (6) standard journalism questions--Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? Videos in this category can include but are not limited to the following topical areas;
- Create a documentary on the use of technology within your school
- Share your world: Technology integration at home and at school
- Create a play or dramatic narrative on the subject of your choice
- Create a documentary showcasing the best technology practice that would aid in teaching and learning today
SHARING EXPERTISE BY DEMONSTRATING A CONCEPT CATEGORY
Entries in this category showcase student's expertise or understanding of a concept or principle. Videos in this category can include but are not limited to the following topical areas;
- Create a video to demonstrate a student's understating of a scientific principle or concept
- Creating a video to demonstrate expertise in using technology to teach a classroom concept
- Creating an instructional video on how to use a piece of technology or equipment in an educational setting
- Create a video illustrating the educational value of current, new or potential future technologies
CONNECTIONS TO THE WORLD CATEGORY
Entries in this category showcase students' understanding of the international context of life in the 21st century. The content should have a basic theme supported by accurate information presented logically. Videos in this category may include the following topical areas:
- Use of technology to connect people around the world who have a common interest
- The international heritage of people and places in your community
- Ways that your daily life is touched by people and products from other countries
- Jobs in your community that depend on international trade, as well as the technologies and skills those jobs require
Note: Note: Videos in either category can include but are not limited to drama, comedy, documentary, interview(s), PSA (Public Service Announcement), music video or any combination of these formats. |
APPLICANT RESOURCES
WHAT DO THE STATE CONTEST WINNERS RECEIVE?
State finalists receive complimentary registration and lunch for up to seven (7) team members (e.g. five (5) students, one (1) teacher, one (1) adult chaperone for the eTech Ohio 2009 Educational Technology Conference, and a stipend to help defray any costs involved with attending the conference. Of the state finalists, one video in each category and grade level will be honored with the distinction of SVC 2009 Video of the Year.

CONTEST TIMELINE
- August 2008: Call for entries released
- August - October, 2008: Regional Ohio Public Television stations provide regional video production workshops
- November 12, 2008: Deadline for submission of all regional Student Video Contests
- November 19, 2008: Review and scoring of regional submissions begins
- December 12, 2008: Review and scoring of statewide semi-finalist submissions from regional contests
- December, 2008: Notification of regional finalists
- December, 2008: Notify State Finalists and invite to eTech Ohio Educational Technology Conference
